Medically Assisted Treatment

Medically Assisted Treatment: Suboxone/Vivitrol

Those participating in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Stonington Institute may benefit from our Medically Assisted Treatment Program. This service is designed to help those suffering from opioid addiction stay on the path to recovery through Suboxone maintenance and Vivitrol service.

How Can MAT Benefit Me?

Adult outpatient treatment contains a variety of addiction treatments. From individual therapy and group therapy to even Medically-Assisted Treatment, all can be beneficial to the right candidate.

However, MAT has been researched heavily due to the controversial nature. Many are asking, why fight a drug addiction with more drugs, but studies show that MAT works and that the controversial opinions are not backed up by the data.

Those with opioid use disorder have been shown to have less painful withdrawal symptoms and adapt to recovery more comfortably than patients who quit cold-turkey. The medications to treat substance use are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA approved) and have a high rate of success when combined with counseling and behavioral health services.

MAT is a useful tool in the fight to treat opioid use disorders – one that date suggests works very well with the right candidate.

Opioid Dependency in Adults

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the opioid epidemic is one of the biggest threats faced by American health care. Since 1999, more than 760,000 people have died of a drug overdose with two out of every three being from opioid overdose.

While things seem to be looking up, this is not a problem that will go away on its own and treatment helps.

Perhaps the biggest statistic from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in terms of MAT is that 1.27 million Americans are already receiving MAT. The use of Medication-Assisted Treatment has increased over 140% from 2016-2018, and it is slowly gaining traction as a tried and true method of treatment for opioid use disorders.
